I kept running into questions about Georgetown that a map would answer, and nobody had made the map. So far the group is me and a short list of those questions. If one of them interests you, that is the whole entry requirement.

How it works

  1. Say hello

The form above takes a minute and comes straight to me. There is nothing else to send and nobody else reads it.

  2. Pick a question

Have a look at the four questions. Each one has a first task on it with an hour attached, and at least one of them needs no software.

  3. Do the first hour

Walk a few blocks, open one data file, photograph one set of doors. Whichever it is, I will sit with you the first time.

  4. It goes up with your name on it

Finished maps go on the projects page, credited to whoever made them. Send me the image and a sentence about it and I will put it there.

Questions people ask

Do I need to code? No. QGIS is point and click, and the workshops start from a blank install. If you can use a spreadsheet, you can make a map.
Do I have to apply? No. There is no application, no interview and nothing to get into. Do a first task and you are in.
How much time is it? An hour to start. After that it is however much you want, and stopping is fine.
What does it cost? Nothing. QGIS is free, the data is public, and so is everything on this site.

If you want to read something first

Neither of these assumes you have opened a mapping program before.
